Getting On-Track: Understanding Freshman Performance at Your School

A series of web reports on student performance indicators that predict graduation
Improving high school graduation rates in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is critical - almost half of CPS students do not graduate.1 Students' performance during their freshman year of high school often predicts whether a student will graduate. In fact, the vast majority of students who are on-track at the end of their freshman year graduate from high school. Below are customized reports offering information about how your school is doing on freshman performance and areas for improvement.

Finding the Freshman Report for Your School

There are three ways to access a freshman report:

1) Scroll through the list box to select a school, OR

2) Click on a letter above the list box to narrow your choices alphabetically, then click on a school, OR

3) Search for a school by typing the name or unit number in the search field (the results will automatically update to match what you've typed). Then, click on a school.

These reports are useful for targeting student intervention strategies and for evaluating which strategies have been successful. The freshman on-track indicator, failures, grades, and absences predict the students who will graduate and those who will dropout. Using these data in the freshman year, you can determine which students are at risk for dropping out and how likely they are to dropout.

The reports are divided into sections by performance indicator and provide information on why the indicators are important, what the indicators look like at your school, and how students with different backgrounds perform on them. In addition, each section provides a list of questions to help understand the data.

Graduation Pathways at CPS also provides a number of resources for understanding and targeting students. The Freshman Watchlist and the Freshman Success Report assign risk levels to each of the current students in your school and provide information on how those students are currently performing. The new Freshman Handbook provides promising practices for using this information and intervening with students. See http://chooseyourfuture.org for more information.
